Fix Outlook Password Prompt

In some cases, you may be prompted every time you open Outlook.  In this case, please follow these directions to remember your password permanently.  This issue is by design, but there is a work around.  Please note, this does not work in Home versions of Windows, this is a limitation in Microsoft Windows Home versions.

  1. Launch Outlook, and when prompted for your username and password, make sure to check the box ‘Save Password’ and login.
  2. In Windows, click the Start Menu > Run > Type in “control keymgr.dll”
  3. You’ll see an entry now with the Exchange Server name. Select it and click Properties
  4. Change the first portion up to the first period ‘.’ with an asterisk ‘*’. (example *.ptcmailonline.net)
  5. For Windows Vista you will need to Add a new entry. For the Log on to field, you will need to replace everything up to the last period with an asterisk “*”. Example: “*.ptcmailonline.net”.  Credential type should be set to “Windows Logon Credential”.
  6. Enter in your password and click OK
  7. Reboot the computer.
  8. If you are still prompted
    1. Enter your username and password and click on save password.
    2. Close out of outlook and test again.
    3. If the issue persists, verify you are NOT running a Home version of windows.  This does NOT work in Windows XP/Vista/7 Home Edition.  This is a limitation of the home version.  Otherwise contact support for further assistance.
